Heavy Fighting Erupts in North Kordofan as Sudanese Army, RSF Battle for Control
Heavy clashes shook Sudan’s North Kordofan state on Monday as fierce fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) escalated. Both sides deployed major reinforcements, each claiming battlefield victories in the strategic region.
According to military sources, the RSF mobilized unprecedented reinforcements from Darfur and parts of West Kordofan, led by commanders Ali Rizqallah “Savana” and Al-Nur Al-Qubba. Fighting has centered in areas south of El Obeid, the state capital, where battles have raged for four consecutive days.
The RSF announced that it had captured Kazgeil and Al-Riash, forcing government troops to withdraw. However, a Sudanese army field commander rejected the claims, stating that his forces remained in control and were pushing forward. These contested towns, which lie along the border between North and South Kordofan, have repeatedly changed hands since June.
The Sudanese army’s primary goal is to reopen the national highway to South Kordofan in order to relieve Kadugli and Dilling, two army-held cities under months-long siege by the RSF and allied SPLM-N forces.
On Monday night, the army launched its most intense artillery strikes in months from El Obeid, targeting RSF positions south and west of the city. This offensive is part of a wider campaign to drive RSF forces from Kordofan and ultimately break the year-long siege of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.
The renewed push follows the army’s recapture of Bara on September 11, a North Kordofan town previously under RSF control since the early phase of the conflict.
