Authorities in Bor, the capital of Jonglei State, have launched a large-scale road rehabilitation project to address worsening conditions that residents say have caused accidents and disrupted daily life.
The project, which began this week, will level and repair key roads across the town. Bor Mayor Jacob Chiek Machar said the initiative is being carried out in partnership with the state government under Governor Riek Gai.
“My office is working closely with the state leadership to ensure our roads are repaired,” Mayor Machar said. “This is a priority to make Bor safer and more accessible for everyone.”
Residents have welcomed the long-awaited effort. Local resident Peter Ajak Ayom described the poor road conditions as a source of suffering for years, citing vehicle breakdowns and even health complications for pregnant women.
The repairs are expected to improve traffic safety, reduce accidents, and ease access to essential services in Bor, where infrastructure challenges have been a persistent problem.
