The United Nations has strongly condemned the deadly strike on a mosque in El-Fasher, North Darfur, that killed at least 43 worshippers during dawn prayers on Friday.
“I am gravely alarmed by an attack today that struck a mosque near the Abu Shouk camp … and claimed the lives of dozens of civilians who were worshipping there,” said Denise Brown, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan.
She stressed that targeting places of worship is a war crime under international law, calling for an investigation and accountability.
The Sudan Doctors’ Network blamed the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for the attack, while the RSF has yet to issue a response.
Sudan has been in civil war since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese military and the RSF. The conflict has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 15 million, according to UN figures. A separate study by US researchers estimates the death toll could be as high as 130,000.
El-Fasher remains one of the most critical battlegrounds, with the RSF maintaining a blockade since May 10, cutting off humanitarian access.
