Ugandan Security Seizes Dr. John Garang Archives at Entebbe Airport

Ugandan security agencies have confiscated personal archives belonging to the late SPLA leader Dr. John Garang de Mabior at Entebbe International Airport, stopping an attempted transfer to South Africa.

The documents, which were destined for the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, were intercepted on August 29. Authorities later arrested a British-German national and a Ugandan citizen linked to the shipment. Both were released on police bond pending investigation, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Patrick Onyango.

Investigators traced the archives to a home in Muyenga, Kampala, where security agents seized laptops, phones, and travel documents. Officials say the inquiry will determine how the foreign national acquired the sensitive materials.

Mabior Garang, the late leader’s son, insists the Ugandan security forces originally gave him the archives in 2013. He says he authorized the transfer to the Thabo Mbeki Foundation until his own Dr. John Garang Foundation in Juba is fully operational.

The archives contain diaries, speeches, battle reports, and internal SPLA correspondence, shedding light on South Sudan’s liberation struggle.
