Two Killed in Lakes State Clash Over Girl’s Elopement

Lakes State Acting Information Minister William Koji Kirjok has confirmed that two people were killed and seven others injured during clashes between the Gak and Lith sections of the Pakam community in Rumbek North County. The violence erupted on Tuesday following a dispute involving a girl’s elopement.

Minister Koji urged both sides to end the fighting and allow authorities to resolve the dispute through legal and traditional channels.

“When such things happen, it is important to go to the police, the government, and the chiefs,” he said. “It is unfortunate that lives were lost. We appeal to clan members not to seek revenge. Anyone who attempts to retaliate and create insecurity will be held accountable.”

He added that the overall situation in Lakes State remains calm, although there are reports of suspected criminals operating in Unity State’s Panyijiar County, near the border with Rumbek North and Yirol East counties. Security forces, he said, are monitoring the situation to prevent further violence.

Civil society activist Daniel Laat Kon condemned the clash, saying the issue could have been resolved without bloodshed.

“People are dying because of a girl eloping—this is a social matter that should not cost lives,” Laat said. He urged communities to embrace dialogue and called on authorities to take swift action against perpetrators.

Laat encouraged families of the victims to avoid revenge and instead trust the government to pursue justice. He also recommended disarming civilians with illegal firearms to help maintain peace.
