Authorities in Lakes State have confirmed the killing of two brothers in Cueibet County following a violent altercation involving a man seeking to marry a girl.
Acting Information Minister William Koji Kirjok said the incident occurred Monday when the man escorted the girl to her home. A disagreement reportedly broke out between him and her brothers, leading to the fatal shooting.
“It needs thorough investigation, but in the process he shot the two brothers, and they died instantly,” Koji said. He assured residents that security forces are pursuing the suspect and that justice would be served.
Cueibet County Executive Director John Aluak Machut said the incident took place in a cattle camp and that authorities have since restored order.
“Three suspects, including the alleged shooter, are now in police custody,” he said.
Civil society activist Daniel Laat Kon of CEPO described the incident as part of a troubling pattern of violence linked to disputes over girls in Lakes State.
He urged families to refrain from revenge and instead allow the government to handle the case through lawful means.
Officials say investigations are ongoing as authorities work to prevent further escalation.
