Tension in Western Equatoria After SPLA-IO Assault on SSPDF Base

NAGERO – An early-morning assault by SPLA-IO forces on a South Sudanese army base in Nagero County has heightened fears of renewed instability in Western Equatoria State.

According to local authorities, the attack began around 5:30 a.m. and was repelled by SSPDF troops, who maintained control of the facility. One government soldier was injured.

“Civilians panicked and ran into the bush after hearing the gunfire,” the county executive director reported. “Although calm has returned, residents remain fearful.”

A second local official said most displaced families have not yet returned and appealed for stronger government protection.

Requests for comment from both SPLA-IO and SSPDF military spokespersons went unanswered.
