Port Sudan Oil Depot Fires Contained After Drone Strikes, Sudan’s Civil Defence Confirms
Sudan’s Civil Defence forces announced on Sunday that they had fully extinguished fires at oil depots in Port Sudan, days after alleged drone attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Lieutenant General Othman Al-Atta, the director of Civil Defence, confirmed that the blazes—burning since last Tuesday at strategic petroleum depots and private warehouses—were brought under control despite “extremely complex conditions” caused by large volumes of stored fuel. He said firefighting teams used high-expansion foam in a carefully executed operation.
The fires forced residents in the Transit neighbourhood to temporarily evacuate due to heavy smoke. Authorities accused the RSF of using suicide drones to target Port Sudan, which has become Sudan’s acting capital during the ongoing war.
In a related development, the Sudanese army reported intercepting RSF drones over both Port Sudan and Atbara on Sunday. Witnesses said anti-aircraft units engaged drones near Atbara’s airport, while drones were sighted over Port Sudan for the seventh consecutive day.
The RSF has stepped up its drone warfare strategy, striking military and civilian targets in Red Sea, Northern, River Nile, Kosti, and White Nile states, posing a growing threat to Sudan’s infrastructure and urban centres.
