Sudan’s Cholera Crisis Deepens in Darfur

Darfur Faces Escalating Cholera Outbreak: 25 Deaths Reported in 48 Hours

The cholera epidemic in Sudan’s Darfur region has reached alarming levels, with 25 people dying within just two days, according to a statement released Monday by the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps.

Spokesman Adam Regal confirmed that since the outbreak began in June, a total of 11,733 infections and 454 deaths have been recorded. Over the weekend alone, 12 deaths occurred on Saturday and 13 on Sunday.

The town of Tawila, located about 60 km west of El Fasher, has emerged as the epicenter of the crisis, reporting 5,417 cases and 78 deaths. On Sunday, 58 new infections were confirmed. Other areas such as Jebel Marra, Zalingei, and Nyala are also seeing a rise in cases.

Footage from Jildo, in western Jebel Marra, revealed dire conditions inside isolation centers, where patients lie on the floor of deteriorating buildings while receiving intravenous fluids. Regal warned of severe shortages of medical supplies, particularly IV solutions, making it harder to contain the outbreak.

Humanitarian organizations, local volunteers, and authorities are battling to curb the spread, but efforts are strained by malaria, child malnutrition, hunger, and a collapsing health system.

Regal described the crisis as a “forgotten humanitarian nightmare,” urging the World Health Organization (WHO) and international partners to ramp up support for Sudan, a nation already devastated by war, famine, and epidemics.
