Sudanese Army Stops RSF Suicide Drone Assault Targeting El Obeid and Central Darfur Leader
The Sudanese army successfully thwarted a suicide drone attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Obeid on Saturday. The assault, claimed by allied forces, reportedly aimed to assassinate Mustafa Tambour, leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) faction and governor of Central Darfur.
According to SLM spokeswoman Inshirah Ali Qaddoum, army air defences intercepted 15 drones targeting Tambour, military installations, and the city itself. No casualties or damage were reported.
Army spokesman Brigadier General Nabil Abdallah confirmed the interceptions, adding, “This childish absurdity will not stop the march to victory.” The SLM emphasized its role in supporting the army’s recent operations, including the recapture of the strategic town of Bara in North Kordofan.
Control of Bara and surrounding areas is considered critical for the army and its allies, as it paves the way to break a siege imposed by the RSF and allied rebel groups on Dilling and Kadugli in neighboring South Kordofan.
The incident highlights the escalating use of drones in Sudan’s ongoing conflict, as paramilitary RSF forces increasingly rely on unmanned aerial attacks against military and political targets.
