Encrypted Phones Complicate Digital Evidence in Machar Trial

Encrypted mobile phones and missing verification data are creating challenges for prosecutors in the trial of suspended First Vice President Riek Machar.

During the 58th court session in Juba on Monday, a government-appointed digital forensic expert said investigators were unable to access several seized devices because they were password-protected.

South African forensic analyst Ratlhogo Peter Calvin Rafadi told the court that one of the locked devices belonged to Machar. He said the court could order that passwords be provided so independent experts can verify the findings.

Defense lawyers are now pushing for outside forensic specialists to review the digital evidence used by prosecutors.
