Traffic Police Director Gen. Kon John Akot Resumes Duty, Denies Misconduct Claims”

Major General Kon John Akot officially resumed his duties as Director of Traffic at the South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) on Monday, days after being briefly transferred to Northern Bahr el Ghazal State as police commissioner.

Speaking to officers at the Traffic Police Headquarters in Juba, Gen. Akot said he had used his personal funds to construct offices and facilities for the department.
“I built the traffic police offices using my own money,” he told staff, adding that his private company, Kon Insurance, financed the conference halls, office furniture and electricity costs.

His return follows a major reshuffle last week by Gen. Abraham Manyuat Peter, who reassigned 13 senior police officials. After the transfer list circulated, Akot dismissed social media rumours claiming he had rejected his posting to Aweil or refused to comply with instructions from the Inspector General of Police.

Gen. Akot, known for his confrontational public style, previously clashed with parliament in October 2023 when he accused the National Legislature of being “illegitimate and unregistered” during a dispute over a presidential order abolishing annual vehicle logbook renewals. He later declined to appear before lawmakers when summoned.

Addressing his staff on Monday, Akot said many commanders in South Sudan prioritize personal interests over national service.
“No commander in the country works for the national interest,” he said. “Every commander works for his own benefit.”

He also rejected accusations that he favours recruits from his home area of Awan.
“All traffic police officers come from various tribes across South Sudan,” he said.

Akot further denied allegations circulating online that he sexually exploits female officers within the department, calling the claims unfounded.
