South Sudan’s Lakes State Marks International Day of Peace with Youth Appeal

RUMBEK – State officials, community leaders and United Nations representatives gathered at Rumbek Freedom Square on Friday to commemorate the International Day of Peace, urging young people to become champions of stability across South Sudan.

The celebration, themed “Act Now for Peace in South Sudan,” was led by the U.N. Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in partnership with humanitarian agencies.

Christopher Muchiru, UNMISS field office head in Rumbek, praised Governor Rin Tueny Mabor for restoring stability in Lakes State, calling it a “haven of peace.” He encouraged youth to resist manipulation by violent actors and instead serve as ambassadors for positive change.

Lakes State Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, William Koji Kerjok, reassured the international community that the trial of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and others is a legal matter and will not derail the 2026 elections or the peace process.

Local leaders also addressed revenge killings and intercommunal conflicts, urging young people to support President Salva Kiir’s peace agenda.

Youth representatives echoed the call. “Our actions today will determine the legacy we leave,” said youth union chairperson Laat Majak, while paramount chief Sebit Kuac Manyiel appealed to UNMISS to help stabilize troubled areas like Pakam.
