Northern Bahr el Ghazal Condemns Attack on Traders in Bor, Urges Calm

Authorities in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have strongly condemned a violent attack on traders from the state operating in Bor, Jonglei State, and called for calm as investigations continue.

Acting Information Minister Dominic Kang Deng told reporters in Aweil on Tuesday that armed youth assaulted several traders in Bor’s Panliet suburb, robbing them of 37 million SSP and $7,000 and inflicting severe machete injuries.

“The state government is in consultation with the Jonglei state government on the urgency and importance of bringing those responsible for the crime to justice,” Kang said, urging residents to remain calm.

The injured victims are receiving medical treatment in Juba.

Local officials in Bor, including Mayor Jacob Achiek, confirmed that suspects had been identified but not yet arrested. He described the attack as the work of a small group and urged the public not to blame the wider Bor community.

Civil society voices, however, expressed concern over the slow response. Ter Manyang Gatwech, executive director of the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CEPO), urged dialogue instead of confrontation. “Suing the government is not the best option. They should engage authorities through peaceful dialogue to find an amicable solution,” he said.
